I’m an American-Brazilian ecologist, conservationist, and writer focused on South American rainforests.

Since 2013 I've been a senior conservation ecologist at the Field Museum of Natural History. For 20 years before that I worked as a plant collector, field ecologist, and consultant on science and conservation projects in Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. From 2003 to 2008 I ran an Amazonian research station in Madre de Dios, Peru. I've authored and co-authored more than 100 papers and book chapters on Amazonian ecology and conservation, and edited 19 books. I've also published a number of non-scientific essays and stories
